For the past three years, I have had the privilege of being part of the Malai Khao Tok Festival celebrations. Each year, I find myself looking forward to it with the same excitement. Even though I now understand the effort and craftsmanship that goes into making the intricate garlands, there is still something magical about finally seeing them displayed and holding them in my hands.

This year’s garlands were as magnificent as ever. Each one was carefully crafted using popped rice and decorated in beautiful color combinations that made them stand out. The creativity displayed by the different groups was impressive. From vibrant patterns to carefully balanced color schemes, the garlands showed just how much time, patience, and teamwork goes into creating them.

Walking around and observing the displays felt like stepping into a gallery of traditional Thai artistry.

One of the most memorable parts of the festival is the grand procession that brings the garlands to the temple as offerings. Despite taking place in the afternoon heat, participants and spectators alike gather enthusiastically to witness the parade. No one seems to mind the scorching sun. The bigger goal is clear. To celebrate the tradition and ensure that it continues to be passed down to future generations.

However, this year’s celebration came with an unexpected challenge.
The region had been experiencing summer storms, and on the first night of the
festival, early in the evening, it started raining. At first, it was only a light drizzle, but soon it turned into a steady downpour. Suddenly, people were running in all directions searching for polythene bags to protect the garlands. They worked quickly to cover them, hoping to minimize the damage.

By the next morning, the effects were clear. The ends of the giant garlands had absorbed water. Small garlands that were last to be covered had shrunk and even changed color. Several groups had to redo parts of their designs before the judging began. Despite the setback, the determination and resilience of the participants were remarkable. The teams worked tirelessly to restore their garlands, showing just how dedicated they were to preserving this beautiful tradition.

When the winning garlands were finally announced, I must admit that the results surprised me. Moments like that remind me that I still have so much to learn about the judging criteria behind these intricate creations.

Every year I attend the festival, I gain a deeper appreciation for the mastery and cultural significance behind it. That’s exactly why I keep looking forward to it.
