I told my friend that I had never been to Chinatown in Bangkok and she looked at me in amazement. Since we were already in the city and had no daytime plans, we decided to explore one of Bangkok’s most famous cultural and tourist destination. From Victory monument we hopped on a bus, with the destination being Yaowarat Road, the heart of Chinatown.

Victory Monument

Like many places in Thailand during festive seasons, it is common for locals to travel to their hometowns to celebrate holidays with family. Chinatown was no exception. The usually crowded streets were quieter, with fewer pedestrians and several shops were closed.

Bangkok Chinatown is known to be one of the largest and oldest in the world. As we walked along Yaowarat Road, traditional Chinese architecture stood out beautifully against the urban landscape. This area reflects the deep Chinese heritage and historical influence in Thailand.

After a short walk from Yaowarat Road, we arrived at Sampeng market. Its one of Bangkok’s most popular open-air shopping markets. Famous for its bustling energy and variety of goods, visitors can buy souvenirs, clothes, toys, accessories, fabrics and handcrafted artefacts in both wholesale and retail. Prices are relatively affordable, making it a shopper’s paradise. The bustling crowds, narrow alleys and tropical heat all contribute to the authentic local market experience.

Hidden within the busy market street is Wat Lokanukroh shrine. It is a sacred site with both Chinese and Vietnamese cultural influences. The unique Buddha statue caught my attention immediately. In Chinese culture, the colors red and gold represent prosperity, good fortune and happiness, which are strongly reflected in the shrine.

As we left Chinatown, I found myself wondering how different the atmosphere would be during normal days, especially during the evening when Yaowarat transforms into one of Bangkok’s most famous street food market destinations. Maybe, this is a call for a return experience.
